Justin Verlander took a no-hitter against the Pirates into the ninth.
–Actually, that part is eminently predictable.
—-What’s not is that Josh Harrison is the one that broke it up.
——And it’s Verlander’s first career one-hitter.

Andy Pettitte pitched eight shutout innings, while striking out nine.
–That’s the first time he’s done that since 1997.
—-And, as we all know, he didn’t pitch last season, making it his first win since July of 2010.

The Blue Jays have scored 14 runs.
–This includes two home runs from J.P. Arencibia and Rajai Davis…
—-But not Edwin Encarnacion or Jose Bautista.
——Rob Johnson, who is a catcher with no prior pitching experience pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the Mets, including a strikeout.

Prince Fielder infield single.

Via @cjloken, Carlos Ruiz has more stolen bases in the last two days (two) than in the last two years (one).

Freddy Galvis hit a home run and Heath Bell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth (it’s Heath Bell, it counts here).

Jered Weaver drew a walk after being down 0-2 in the count.

Kevin Millwood pitched a two-hit complete game shutout.
–At Coors Field.
—-We’re kind of speechless, too.
——The other pitcher to do that this year? Barry Zito.

There was a bases-loaded walk involving Barry Zito.
–Zito was the hitter.

Emmanuel Burriss was intentionally walked.

Adam Kennedy came into today’s game hitting .186 on the year.
–He had four hits and a walk.
—-The Dodgers won on a walkoff walk.

It’s not really unpredictable, but we dare you to watch this clip of Kerry Wood striking out the final batter he’ll face and not get emotional…

PUJOLS HOMERED AGAIN!!!!!

Roy Halladay beat the Cubs.
- We love us some bizarro YCPB.

In Diamondbacks/Rockies, Alex White (as in the pitcher) had to pinch-hit with the bases loaded and nobody out.
- Jason Giambi hit an infield single.
– Both teams batted around in the eighth.
— BEES. (Warning, gross insect picture)
—- I feel like every game I’ve watched at Coors this season belongs in YCPB.

The Yankees have scored 0 or 1 run nine times in 37 games. That’s the same number as the Twins and Mariners. (h/t @mikeaxisa)
- Speaking of the Twins, they swept the Tigers at Comerica (in a two-game set).
– Drew Butera had three hits.
— Trevor Plouffe hit a home run. We’re just mentioning him because we like his name a lot.
—- This was also important so he could keep pace with Pujols at three each.

Ronny Cedeno hit a massive home run today.
- After this series, the Reds are staying in New York while the Mets go on the road. Kinda weird.

Brandon League blew a save to Cleveland.
- He’s blown seven saves in nine chances to Cleveland in his career, and has given up more earned runs than innings pitched against the Indians.
– The Indians tied it after being down early on a home run in the eighth by… Jose Lopez.

- Now he’s second in home runs to only Hamilton.
– Who Tommy Milone struck out today.

The Tigers infield made three errors within the first ten batters of today’s game.
- None of the errors were made by Miguel Cabrera.

This is Felix’s 21st start where he gave up 6+ ER.
- The Mariners are 3-18 in those starts. Granted, that’s pretty terrible. But with the Mariners and their offense, it’s surprising they won any at all.
– One of those wins was actually this year.

Jamie Moyer had two RBIs today.
- He has a higher OBP than Albert Pujols.

Did you know the Marlins are 12-3 in May? I didn’t.

Stephen Strasburg lasted only four innings today.
–He was facing the Padres.
—-He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks, but somehow still stuck out five.
——He allowed a home run to James Darnell, who has a .222 career batting average.
———Will Venable was a home run away from the cycle by the fourth inning.
————The Padres have now beaten Halladay twice and Strasburg once. (h/t @shoshanadp

David Ortiz had a bunt single and then proceeded to make it all the way to third without a hit. (h/t @notespnstito)

Derek Lowe threw a six-hit complete game shutout.
—He didn’t strike out a single batter.
—–Via @pmac21, 115 of Lowe’s 127 pitches were sinkers.

Travis Ishikawa hit two home runs in the same game.

Edwin Encarnacion trails only Josh Hamilton and Curtis Granderson in AL home runs.

Vin Mazzaro was an inning shy of a quality start…
—Against the Rangers.
—-The Rangers just got swept by the Royals, actually.
——-Losing to Bruce Chen and Vin Mazzaro.
———And Josh Hamilton did not homer, in either game.

Albert Pujols had three hits.
–(okay, now we’re just being mean).

The Phillies won a game Cliff Lee started.
- Yes, this is unpredictable. The last time the Phillies won a game either Halladay OR Lee started, it was April 16.
– The Phillies have still lost five straight Halladay starts.
— The last time that happened was…… 1999 (!!!).

The Rangers were held to just one run
- By the Royals.
– Bruce Chen started!
— Chen and the bullpen combined to give up seven hits, one run, and strike out eleven while walking only two.
—- Chen himself struck out seven over 6.2 innings.
—– This is just the second time all year the Rangers have been held to one or zero runs
—— And they won the other game.
——- The only other time Chen had beaten Texas was in 2005.
——– He had an ERA over 10 against them headed into today’s game.
——— Let’s all remember Texas destroyed Jered Weaver yesterday, too.

Welcome Marwin Gonzalez, Placido Polanco, and Daniel Nava to the “As Many Homers As Albert Pujols” Club.
- And Ian Kennedy has as many unintentional walks as him.

The Red Sox have 100 doubles already.

The Padres are the only NL team with a walk rate (offense-wise) over 10%.

Miguel Batista beat the Brewers.
- The last time this happened, it was 1999.
– And he was on the Expos.

Adam Dunn passed his homer total from last year.
- He homered off a lefty, too.
– His last homer off a lefty was in 2010!
— That lefty was Clayton Kershaw.

Kevin Millwood gave up one run on three hits over seven innings.
-This was just the third start in which Millwood has given up fewer than four runs.
–This one was against the Yankees. The other two were against Toronto and Texas.
—All three have been on the road. Keep in mind his home park is Safeco Field.
—-All three Yankees-Mariners games have ended in a 6-2 score.
—–Both of the Yankees runs came on bases-loaded walks.

The Twins won.
-Brian Dozier homered. He now has as many as Pujols (had to).
–Jeff Mathis: pinch-runner.

AJ Burnett allowed just two runs in eight innings.
-He also didn’t walk anyone.
–The game went into extras when Brett Myers, who had allowed one run in 11.2 innings with a 0.600 WHIP, blew the save.
—During the extra innings, Clint Barmes wound up playing first base for the first time in his professional career. Pitcher James McDonald also pinch-hit.
—-Barmes, who entered the day hitting .153/.184/.286, would double and score the winning run in the 12th.
—–Carlos Lee had an infield single during this one.

Josh Hamilton did not hit a home run.
-Still had three RBIs though, giving him 44 on the year.
–Jered Weaver gave up eight runs in just 3.1 innings.

Ted Lilly is 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA.
-Michael Cuddyer stole two bases.
–That’s just the third multi-SB game of his career.

Seth Smith homered off Justin Verlander.
-Seth Smith has a .394 OBP with more walks than strikeouts.

Jeff Suppan has a 1.69 ERA despite just four strikeouts in 16 innings.

Nick Johnson homered again.
-Fernando Rodney has now allowed just one run in 16.2 innings.
–Even crazier, he’s only walked three in that span, one of them intentional.
—The Orioles just played game 13 of a 15 game stretch against the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, and Rays. So far they are 8-5.

Adam Dunn was caught stealing.
-The more unpredictable part is why was he even going? He hasn’t successfully stolen a base since 2008.

Barry Zito turned in a quality start as the Giants beat Arizona.
-That’s Zito’s fifth quality start, tied with Bumgarner and one behind Matt Cain for the team lead.
–Tim Lincecum has just one, also known as “as many as Eric Hacker”.

Washington pounded out 16 hits and lost.
-Seven different players had multihit games, but none had a three-hit game.
–Joey Votto had four hits, and three of them left the yard, the last one for a walkoff Grand Slam.
—Fourteen total bases is just one shy of the Reds franchise record set by Walker Cooper in 1949.
—-He’s the first Red with a 14-TB game since Jeffrey Hammonds in 1999 during a 24-12 game in which all the runs were scored by the top of the 7th. Oh Coors Field.
—–The Slam came off of Henry Rodriguez, who has allowed just five homers in his 112.2 inning career.

Speaking of walkoff Grand Slams, Giancarlo Stanton.
-The Mets had three different relievers either take a blown save or the loss, spoiling an excellent Jon Niese outing.
–Heath Bell came in in the ninth in a tie game at home.
—And promptly got his ERA back over 10, allowing two runs.
—-The Mets promptly blew it, giving up two runs and with Greg Dobbs on first, they walked Hanley and hit Austin Kearns, leading to Stanton sending everyone home.

This was the first day with two walkoff Grand Slams since April 10th, 1998.
-This was one of those games.
–There is plenty of fun stuff in there, but how about Randy Johnson striking out 15 in eight innings, and the Red Sox scoring seven runs in the bottom of the ninth without recording an out.

You know who has more home runs than Pujols? Josh Hamilton.
- He’s outhomering the Padres
– by five homers.
— With 18 home runs already, he has as many or more home runs than all of the following did last year: Kevin Youkilis, Chipper Jones, Brandon Phillips, Carlos Lee, and Alex Rodriguez.

The Padres won a game against Roy Halladay.
- Halladay struck out ten.
– And Edinson Volquez was the Padres’ starter.

The Yankees beat Felix Hernandez at Yankee Stadium.
- Prior to tonight, he had given up just one earned run in 24 innings pitched at the new Stadium.
– He also gave up a run in the first inning, breaking a streak of 18 games with no first inning runs.

Orioles have sole possession of first place in the AL East.
- This is in part because Nick Johnson both stole a base and hit a home run.
– Yes, in the same game.

Yadier Molina had two passed balls and a wild pitch in the same game.

Via @ckamka: 2012 is the third time Adam Dunn hit his 11th HR of the season on May 11th (2003, 2004, 2012).

Yonder Alonso hit his first home run of the season.
- It’s the Padres’ first home run since May 1st (from the exquisite Diane of VORG, which y’all should read – it’s in the drop down menu in our header).

Paul Konerko struck out three times tonight.
- Adam Dunn didn’t strike out at all.
– Via @josh_batelli, Adam Dunn actually had chance to tie record for striking out in 37 straight games.

David DeJesus pinch-hit grand slam.
- He came into the game in the seventh inning with four RBI on the season.
– He had five tonight.
— Actually, all of Cubs/Brewers was delightful.
—- John Axford’s save streak was broken, and he left this note.
—– The winning pitcher was Vinnie Chulk, who got his first victory since August 2007.

Jamie Moyer struck out Matt Kemp.
- Actually he struck out the side in the second inning
– and still lost, pretty badly.

The Astros won without an RBI.

Mike Napoli tripled in back-to-back games.

Via @jimcaple, Chris Davis is tied for the second-most wins at Fenway this year.
- From Jeremy Lundblad, the Patriots have more home wins (including playoffs) since September 1st than do the Red Sox.
– (The Red Sox won at home today)

Oh, and just for kicks: in 2012, Brandon Inge had more grand slams over three games than Derek Jeter has had in his whole career.

Colby Lewis with an early frontrunner for line of the year: 7 IP, 5 H, 6 R/ER, 1 BB, 12 K.
- Only made better because all five of those hits were home runs.
– Ryan Flaherty, JJ Hardy, and Nick Markakis opened the game with home runs off Lewis.
— That’s the first time in AL history a team has led off a game with back-to-back-to-back home runs.
—- The last time it happened in the NL, in 2007 with the Brewers, one of the players involved was JJ Hardy.
—– Lewis’ 12 strikeouts are the most by a pitcher who gives up five home runs in the same game. The old record was 9, by Charlie Hough in a game for the 1989 Rangers.

Stephen Strasburg struck out seven in a row at one point tonight.
- Yes, it was the Pirates, but he is really good.
– He also walked three in a row at one point to load the bases!!! (But got out of it)

Jeff Keppinger struck out
- for only the second time this season.
– Against a lefty. He hits lefties quite well.
— Before tonight, David Price had given up only one home run this year.
—- To Jeff Mathis.
—– Tonight he gave up two more home runs, both to lefties. They were to Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson, so really good lefties, but remember how totally hopeless Granderson was against LHP just two years ago.

Ubaldo Jimenez and Justin Masterson are tied for the major league lead in walks.
- Both Jimenez and Derek Lowe have walked more batters than they’ve struck out.
– May I remind you the Indians are in first place.
— And hung seven runs on Josh Beckett in under three innings tonight.

Brandon Inge hit another grand slam.
- Of course, this one was against the Tigers.
– The As still lost by four runs.

“Ryan Dempster has allowed six runs in five starts and is 0-1. Clay Buchholz has allowed 34 runs in six starts and is 3-1.”

Ervin Santana got run support tonight…the first time in 35 innings the Angels have scored for him.

The Mets had a 4-5-6 of Hairston-Rottino-Turner against Cliff Lee today.
–To be fair, it was Lee’s first start since returning from the DL.
—-It’s the first time the Mets have swept the Phillies in Philadelphia in six years.

The Brewers lost by a score of 2-1 today, with all runs coming in the ninth inning.
–It’s the first time the Brewers have lost a Greinke start in Miller Park.
—-Greinke’s line? Eight IP, two hits, no runs, no walks, 11 strike outs.

Adam Dunn now has 10 home runs.
–He didn’t hit his 10th last season until July.
—-Edwin Encarnacion also hit his 10th home run tonight.
——Last year, he hit is 10th in mid-August.

David Robertson gave up a home run, and four runs in an inning.
–It’s the first time he’s allowed runs since last September.

Andrew McCutchen scored from second base on a ground ball to the shortstop that the shortstop fielded and attempted to throw him out at home instead of going for first base.
